Abstract

What distinguishes the grammar of Sībawayhi's Kitāb is that it belongs to a pragmatic functional perspective, which pays great attention to the elements of communication: the addresser, the addressee, and the context, as well as to the argumentative nature of his dialogue so that he can completely convince others with his argumentations.

This research mainly aims to study the argumentative methods used by Sībawayhi in his dialogue with the "Grammarians" when he objected to and refuted their opinions as they resorted to affected formal analogy and preferred it to the spoken language by the Arab Bedouins.

This research consists of an introduction which deals with the identity of the "Grammarians" Sībawayhi argued with, a short description of the argumentation strategies as well as the argumentative connectors.

Key words: Grammar, Sībawayhi, Pragmatics, Argumentation.
