Abstract

This paper explores the phenomenon of grief in Sabt Ibn Al-Taa'weethi's poetry in which he wrote about the accident that befell him in 579 AH and resulted in his loss of eyesight. Given the lack of independent study about the substantive and artistic issues in this poetry, this paper examines Al-Taa'weethi's poetic works and reflects on the phenomenon of grief characterizing his writing after he had lost his eyesight. The paper addresses such substantive issues as commemoration, complaint, propitiation, nostalgia, comparison, despair, resignation and admonition. Artistically, the paper explores visual images, repetition of the words of darkness, clarity of language and spontaneity of poetry.
