The Damascene Historian Al Izz Bin Taj Al Umanaa' Ibn Asakir (643AH/1245 AD) and His Book 'The Diary of Genealogy'

Abstract

The present paper sheds light on the character, life, and the educational background of the unrenowned Damascene historian, Al Izz bin Taj Al Umanaa' ibn Asakir (643AH/1245 AD). The paper also investigates his history book entitled 'The Diary of Genealogy' in terms of its title, scope and approach with the aim of focusing on its importance as a historic source for Damascus and it community in the first half of the 7th H century/ 13 AD century; its significance for the historians who came after him, namely the Damascene historian Abu Shama (665 AH/ 1266 AD) who adopted lots of ibn Asakir's research.
