Abstract
This paper sheds light on an issue which Arab linguists showed no conscience. The paper highlights the opposing views of the issue as well as the Quranic and poetic texts on which linguists have based their opinions. Then surveys all the occurrences in which “kaad “surveys the function of negation in the holy Quran as well as pre- Islamic and Islamic poetry. The paper has come up with the conclusion that Quranic and poetic occurrences of “kaad “mostly indicate that it means the action expressed by the verb that follows is not highly probable. Moreover the holy Qura'n has used the negative “kaad “in conformity with what the Arab do.
