Abstract
This study is a description of an optional course Presentations and debates which is offered by the department of French language and literature at the University of Jordan in the fourth year. Following a short introduction on the theoretical notions concerning strategic interaction in foreign language, the methodology of the course and the strategies of the teacher to promote debate and incite learners to talk are presented along with authentic examples from the students’ interventions during the classes.
The study reports also on an evaluation of this methodology through a questionnaire covering the different stages of the course. In fact, one hundred and twenty students representing four classes of the department took part in this questionnaire. The analysis of the results shows that the course is highly appreciated by our students who consider it as a sort of liberation from the constraints of classical courses since it takes place within a free atmosphere where they learn to get rid of their shyness in order to express themselves orally in French while opening out new horizons for them.
Keywords: French as a foreign language, presentation, debate, strategic interaction, oral production.
