Abstract

This research project tackles two topics that pre-occupied the Arab rhetoricians. The first concerns the confusion in Arabic rhetoric whether it is a mental or linguistic imagery. When did it appear? Who raised it? And what are the attitudes of Arab rhetoricians against it. The second researches the relation between implicit metaphor and mental imagery. The discussion focuses especially on the view of Al-Sakkaki who relates mental imagery to implicit metaphor and discusses in detail al-khatib al- qazweeni’s view mentioned above.

This research refers to the possibility that contemporary researchers might have confusion between implicit metaphor and some forms of mental imagery. The research gives reasons why and distinguishes between this confusion and al.sakkaki’s view.
