Abstract
This study investigates the impact of sense relations on rules formulation of Arabic syntactic structures. It seeks to highlight the importance of sense relations, namely synonymy, oppositions, hyponymy, and meronymy, in constructing Arabic syntactic structures. It also examines the influence of these relations, which may be considered as one of the main devices that were adapted by the ancient and the modern Arab grammarians, on formulating syntactic rules. To achieve its goals, the study reviews main Arabic grammar sources, and it draws upon ideas from semantics.
The study’s findings reveal that the sense relations are of a remarkable significance on the lexicogrammatical level, as lexical associative relations of several Arabic syntactic structures. Arab grammarians referred extensively to notions and terms of synonymy, oppositions, hyponymy, and meronymy while stating rules of syntactic structures that includes constituents, such as circumstantial accusative, specificative, verbal corroboration, unrestricted object, coupling conjunction, exception, and annexation.
