The Changing Attitudes towards the Jordanian Women Status in the Labor Market: An Empirical Study on a Sample of Employees in the City of Irbid

Abstract

The changing attitudes towards the Jordanian women status in the labor market: a empirical study on a sample of employees in the city of Irbid.

The study aimed at revealing the effect of some variables in changing the attitudes of the employees at the Jordanian institutions in the city of Irbid towards the status of the worker woman in the Jordanian community. It also aimed to explain whether those attitudes are changed according to some variables, such as (age, education level, kind of work, religion, marital status, and income).

The sample of the study consisted of (746) Jordanian employees in the institutions of the city of Irbid. Those employees were over the age of twenty. The sample was chosen purposefully. After having the approval of such institutions, the researchers made interviews with all employees, males and females.

The instrument used in the sample consisted of (12) paragraphs to measure the attitudes of those employees towards the worker woman's status in the Jordanian community. T-test, one-way Anova were used to test the significant differences among the mean scores of the answers of the members of the sample.

After analyzing the data, the results showed statistically significant differences between males and females towards the working woman's status in the Jordanian community in favor of the males. There were also differences in the mean scores and in f-value in accordance with the age; as the age was older, the significant was negative towards the working woman's status.

There was a positive relation between the education level of the employees and their general attitude towards the working woman's status. The study also revealed that there was no effect for the kind of work for women on the employees' attitudes towards the working woman's status.

The results showed statistically significant differences due to the variable of religion. In addition, there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the employees due to their marital status. The single employees were more positive towards the working woman's status than the married and divorced employees.

The study showed that the employees of low income were less positive towards the working woman's status than those of high income. In other words, there was a positive relation between the income and the working woman's status in the Jordanian community.

The study came up with a final result indicates that the general attitude in the Jordanian community towards the working woman's status is positive, which is an indicator to the maturity of the community towards positive values of justice and equality among all the members of the community, males and females.
