Abstract

This paper aims at examining the exotic aspects of Salammbo. This theme appears in the Carthaginians novel in different ways. Indeed, this novel illustrates Flaubert'attempt to escape from reality. His refusal of the latter leads him therefore to seek refuge in literature, to escape in time and space. In this sense, the exoticism of Flaubert is represented in space, a place where the author projects the strangeness of his phobias or fantasies. His exoticism is thus in the choice of subject, setting and relationship to space and time.
