Abstract
This research is concerned with the idea of phonetical grading in the studies of Arab scholars, starting from Sibawayh's trial in his book; which is considered the oldest Arabic methodical trace in the field of linguistics, where he divided the characters that form the phonetic system in the Arabic language; so that consonants were divided into three parts: the first section being the standardized consonants of the formal level used in
Qur'an and Arabic Poetry, The second being formal as well, but less commonly used in the formal contexts, yet accepted to be used in Qur'an and Poetry, and the third section was considered not suitable to be used in Qur'an and Poetry. This study has revealed the effect of this grading system in the development of alternative or elective forms in language.
This study aims to analyze Sibawayh's and other scholars' standards in grading the phonetical system of the Arabic language; where it uses the descriptive analytical method to reach the results.
