The Structure of Poetic Image in Al-Sayyab’s Poetry: “The Gardens of Wafiqa” as an Example

Abstract

 

The present study comes to the conclusion that al-Sayyab, in his last poetic period, in his deep emotional involvement with Wafiqa, created his mythology wherein Wafiqa is the central symbol. In this creative process, he utilizes highly artistic techniques that enabled him to fuse together in “The Gardens of Wafiqa” a number of different forms of poetic images tied together in an organic fashion. In this he makes use of several sources, the most important of which may be his own previous experience within the framework of modernism, in addition to some Western influence whose mythical, cultural and poetic heritage has given him inspiration.
