Abstract

In this research I studied and analysed the beauty of the place in Dewan “Sama’a Ukhra” written by the poet Mahmoud Al Shalabi in Jordan.

I studied the place within the framework of specific binaries and these are: the historical place/the place at the present time, the high place/low place, the desert/the garden, and the real place/the symbolic place. Studying the binaries or the correspondence means to use the structural approach.

The study showed that the Jordanian place is contemporary with a long historical memory.

The poet has visited the places in the present time describing its beauty and then he described its valuable past.

Studying the high/low place, we realize that the paradox between them does not lead to a contradiction in significance; on the contrary, the poet put them in an integrated and harmonic picture.

The poet did not mention the desert too much, but he mentioned the clouds and the oasis or life. On the other hand, he mentioned the garden and the field which occupied most of his soul and his poems.

Dewan Sama’a Ukhra gave the places of Jordan a symbolic significance. For example, the south of Jordan has become the symbol of originality and steadfastness, the north symbolizes the science and knowledge, the mountains of Salt symbolize the nobility, and the Jordan valley is a symbol of giving and fertility.
