Abstract

The commentary of the Qur’an by Ibn ‘Ashur, titled “Tafsir al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir” (The Exegesis of Liberation and Enlightenment) is the most well-known book ever written by this scholar. It is considered one of the best books that studied the Qur’anic style and eloquence. One of the unique aspects of this Exegesis is its interest in collecting arguments and narrations of previous exegetes and critically analyzing and evaluating them. Ibn ‘Ashur was very much concerned of linguistic issues related to the Qur’an, and he managed to discover and point out numerous rhetoric and linguistic approaches that clearly show the inimitability of the Qur’anic text that made the Arabs, in whose language the Qur’an was revealed, incapable of forming such a similar text. Al-Tadmin (inclusion of meanings) in the Qur’anic text was one of the main issues studied by Ibn ‘Ashur. The way how he dealt with this issue in his Exegesis was rich, diverse, and wide, especially in presenting numerous arguments and discussing them. Yet it should be pointed out that his dealing with this matter in particular suffered from confusion, and sometimes contradictions in many of the examples of al-Tadmin that he examined and analyzed in his commentary.
